TUNING YOUR 22RE
" Tune your 22RE "
Welcome to the first and only product specifically designed and developed to
tune your Toyota 22RE engine. Now it is entirely possible to tune your stock or
modified engine for maximum power potential through the stock engine management
computer in either naturally aspirated or forced induction configurations.
Through the use of a Windows based PC computer you now finally have control of
your engine’s air to fuel ratio and ignition timing. You will never again have
to attempt adjusting the air flow meter. Instead the system utilizes modern
digital "Mass Air Flow" technology instead of the antiquated analog "air flow
The system includes a programmable signal calibrator, MAF sensor and aluminum
housing. A high quality performance air filter and required wiring terminals are
included. Typical installation time is 3-4 hours.
We offer 3 configurations for 1989 – 1995 22RE’s
The first kit is recommended for stock engines and utilizes the stock, original
Kit 1 Includes:
Aluminum MAF Sensor Adapter
K&N Air Filter
Installation and Programming
$924.73 plus S&H
The second kit is recommended for naturally aspirated modified engines that have
performance cylinder head modifications, performance camshaft profiles,
increased displacement, headers and exhaust. High flow 300 cc fuel injectors is
included in the kit.
Kit 2 Includes:
Everything in Kit 1 plus (4)
300cc Fuel Injector Set
$1174.73 plus S&H
The third kit is recommended for supercharged or turbocharged 22RE’s, the
included set of 420 cc fuel injectors will safely support the fuel requirements
of 200 h.p at the wheels.
Kit 3 Includes:
Everything in Kit 1 plus
(4) 420cc Fuel Injector Set
(4) Injector electrical Pigtails
$1284.73 plus S&H
(A personal computer with a 9-pin COM port is required and not included)
TUNING SUGGESTIONS AND TIPS
Suggested tuning, tools and equipment
Read the R4 Engine Programming instructions
1. Digital volt ohm meter
2. A/F mixture meter
3. Timing light
4. Vacuum / boost gauge
5. Single pole toggle switch
Stock "VS" output voltages at various operating conditions
Idle = 4.80 volts @ 800 R.P.M (stock ignition timing)
Cruise = 7.50 volts @ 2000 R.P.M / 32 M.P.H
W.O.T = 8.90 volts (12.0 -12.8 to 1 A/F ratio)
Fast idle = 7.34 – 6.73 volts (cold coolant temp. 14.7 to 1 A/F ratio)
Fuel injector sizing
Fuel injector’s should only support an additional 10 to 20% H.P than actual H.P
requirements. Failure to match injector sizing correctly can cause engine damage
or poor driveability.
The FTC-089 calibrator provides up to 20 degrees of ignition timing retard, for
those requiring additional "initial" timing advance you simply increase the
initial timing of your choice and then retard the same amount of your increase.
For turbo or supercharged applications, you generally are concerned about
detonation during boosted conditions.
5 degrees initial, plus 35 advance, equals 42 degree’s of total timing. If you
choose to advance your initial timing to 12 degree’s for better performance, you
would then need to retard 7 degree’s of ignition timing in MAP B, typically at
the 2000 R.P.M and up cells. This procedure allows for the initial advance
increase and maintains the same total advance as original. Your optimum timing
curve will depend on your specific engine’s requirements.
